Much of this work was done while the senior author was on a one-year secondment to the Nematology Department, University of California, Riverside. We thank J. Fukuto for assistance. tonnes /ha were obtained in 1974-75 following fumigation with Te lone (1,3-dichloropropene) or D-D in combination with an "at-planting" treatment with Tem ik 15 G (2-methyl-2-(methylthio)propionaldehyde O(methylcarbamoyl)oxime) in a silty clay soil (Brinkman, Imperial Valley, southern California) (4). Yield increases were greater with fumigant nematicides (D-D or Telone), alone or in combination with the granular Tem ik 15 G or Furadan 10 G (2-dihydro-2,2dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methyl carbamate), than with the granular compounds used alone (3). T h e five tests reported here were conducted to test effects of chemical control in fields infested with low populations of H. schachtii. Four of the five experiments (Chew, Lerno, Doel I, Doel II) were on clay

Resistance of Trisomic and Diploid Hybrids of Beta vulgaris and B. procumbens to the Sugarbeet Nematode, Heterodera schachtiis Arnold.
Trisomic and diploid hybrids of sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) X wild beet (B. procumbens Chr. Sin.) inherited the gene for resistance to Heterodera schachtii Schm. from B. procumbens. The hybrids showed partial resistance to H. schachtii, manifested in failure of larvae to reach maturity. Although significantly greater numbers of female nematodes developed on plants inoculated with populations f...
متن کاملInvasion of Sugarbeet Leaf Blades by Larvae of Heterodera schachtii.
Although Polychronopolis and Lownsbery (1) found that Heterodera schachtii invaded the radicle, hypocotyl, and cotyledons of seedling sugarbeet, they observed no histological or cytological changes other than cellular death and disorganization. Ross (2) reported development of females and brown cysts accompanied by formation of giant cells and hypertrophy in leaves of white clover inoculated wi...
متن کاملComparative Morphometrics of Eggs and Second-Stage Juveniles of Heterodera schachtii and a Race of H. trifolii Parasitic on Sugarbeet in The Netherlands.
Measurements of second-stage juveniles of Heterodera schachtii from California and The Netherlands and a race of H. trifolii from The Netherlands were obtained and compared to determine if these populations can be differentiated by morphometrics. Juvenile lengths of 10 specimens from each of 10 cysts of each population were measured. Dimensions of tail regions of 20 juveniles from individual cy...

The effects of Dactylella oviparasitica strain 50 applications on sugarbeet cyst nematode (Heterodera schachtii) population densities and plant weights were assessed in four agricultural soils. The fungus was added to methyl iodide-fumigated and nonfumigated portions of each soil. The soils were seeded with Swiss chard. Four weeks later, soils were infested with H. schachtii second-stage juveni...
متن کاملSusceptibility of plant selections to Heterodera schachtii and a race of H. trifolii parasitic on Sugarbeet in The Netherlands.
Similar host ranges were found for Heterodera schachtii and a race of H. trifolii parasitic on sugarbeet in The Netherlands. Twenty-nine of 41 plant accessions evaluated were susceptible to H. trifolii. Five breeding lines of the interspecific hybrid Beta vulgaris-B. procumbens which are resistant to H. schachtii were highly susceptible to H. trifolii. An accession of B. maritima with partial r...
